Zebra-Striping Events: A Step Towards Inclusion

THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF EVENTS

The evolution of society’s approach to health and our drinking habits presents a unique challenge and opportunity for event planners. With 39% of 18-25-year-olds (YouGov survey by Portman Group, 2024) now opting for alcohol-free lifestyles, it's imperative to reimagine events to ensure an inclusive and welcoming environment that respects everyone’s lifestyle choices.

Why Zebra-Striping Matters

Zebra-striping, the practice of alternating alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, offers a practical solution to cater for diverse preferences. By offering a variety of non-alcoholic beverages that are equally appealing, event planners can create an atmosphere where all attendees feel their choices and needs have been considered and respected.

The Benefits of Zebra-Striping

  • Enhanced Inclusivity: By providing a range of options, all attendees feel valued and included, regardless of their drinking habits.

  • Improved Well-being: Promoting moderation and offering non-alcoholic alternatives can contribute to the overall well-being of attendees.

  • Reduced Risk of Negative Behaviors: By encouraging responsible drinking and offering non-alcoholic choices, mitigate the risk of negative behaviours such as excessive alcohol consumption and harassment.

  • Positive Brand Perception: Event planners who prioritize inclusivity and well-being can enhance their brand reputation and attract a wider audience.

Practical Tips for Implementing Zebra-Striping

1.        Collaborate with Suppliers: Work with suppliers to source high-quality, innovative non-alcoholic beverages that can complement the alcoholic offerings. I can personally recommend Jump Ship who exhibited at a recent event I attended.

Laura Willoughby, Club Soda and Narmeen Kamran, Desert Islands Events and Temperance AF were interviewed on The Meeting Room (watch here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6idDY3A9qPY&t=2s) gave a great interview discussing the issues of serving only alcoholic drinks at events.

2.        Promote Responsible Drinking: Incorporate messaging about responsible drinking and the benefits of moderation. Offer one third of drinks alcohol free.

3. Gather Feedback: Collect feedback from attendees to continuously improve the event experience.

By embracing zebra-striping and prioritizing inclusivity, event planners can create memorable events that cater to a diverse range of preferences and needs.
